About me

I began my working life as a potter and ran my own studio making wood fired stoneware in the tradition of Chinese and Korean porcelain and stoneware. In 1986 I retrained as a carpenter and joiner. After a spell doing site carpentry, furniture making and making and supply of kitchens, I received a commission to build my first oak frame and never looked back. My career was blessed with serendipitous things happening all the time and my company grew to employ a team of 30. We made some of the most exciting timber structures in the UK and gained a national reputation. We also carried out restoration work on grade I listed buildings such as Hampton Court Palace and Windsor Castle.

My business

The Green Oak Carpentry Company Ltd fabricates and installs high end timber buildings. We also repair historic timber buildings and carry out condition surveys, historical impact assessments, schedules and specification of repairs and other tasks.
The Company employs the services of architects and engineers to enable the integration of good design into the procurement of timber structures at an early stage.
Green Oak acts as consultants to architectural and engineering practices to assist in developing complex timber structures with input into timber selection, specification and procurement, design, engineering, buildability and cost. Two of our projects were runner-up to the Stirling Prize; The Weald and Downland Museum Grid-shell in 2002, and Savill Gardens Grid-shell in 2006. Three of our projects have gone on to win the Wood Awards Gold Medal.
