WHAT IS SUBUD?
Introduction to Subud
Subud is an international spiritual association open to people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures. It is not a religion, philosophy, or teaching. Instead, it offers a unique personal experience called the latihan kejiwaan—a natural spiritual practice that connects individuals with their inner self and divine guidance.
A Brief History
Subud began in Indonesia in the 1920s, founded by Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo, known as Bapak. His experience of receiving the latihan spontaneously led to the spread of this practice worldwide. Today, Subud is present in over 80 countries, fostering a sense of unity beyond cultural or religious boundaries.
What is the Latihan Kejiwaan?
The latihan (meaning 'spiritual training') is a simple, spontaneous experience. You stand relaxed, allowing inner guidance to emerge naturally—without effort, concentration, rituals, or teachers. There are no chants, postures, or doctrines. Each session lasts about 30 minutes and is typically practiced twice a week in a group setting.
Over time, practitioners report increased inner peace, clarity, emotional balance, and a deeper sense of purpose. The latihan supports personal growth, helping individuals navigate life with greater awareness and connection to their true self.

Subud does not require you to change your beliefs, adopt new teachings, or follow a leader. It is not a sect, meditation technique, or therapy. There are no obligations, fees, or commitments beyond your personal wish to participate
Who Can Join and How?
Anyone over 17 who feels genuinely drawn to experience the latihan can join. The process begins with a simple conversation and a waiting period to ensure readiness. After that, you are 'opened'—a natural initiation where you begin to receive the latihan.
Subud operates as a non-profit, relying on voluntary contributions. There is no charge for participating.

- Any excess funds received through donations, beyond what is needed for the website’s maintenance, will be managed at the discretion of the Zone 4 Council to ensure their best use.
